Sonia and Rahul to Face Trial..!
On Friday, the Supreme Court said that it found “no justification” in stopping the prosecution of Congress’ Sonia & Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case.

The bench said “it is not our business to get into all this” and that the court has a “very limited scope” to intervene at this stage. Lawyers representing the Congress leaders said that there can’t be public interest when allegations include cheating and criminal breach of trust. They said, “Swamy’s complaint has to be dismissed on the ground of locus since he is neither a victim nor a deceived person.” They explained that no one linked with the National Herald newspaper or the Congress party has complained.

However, the bench told the lawyers to put forward their matters at the stage of charge framing, but not at this occasion. The next trial court hearing is on 20 Feb.

Muslim Girl tops Ramayana Exam
In a shining example of religious tolerance, a Muslim girl from Puttur in Karnataka was encouraged to write an exam on Ramayana a core Hindu script. She did so in style, topping the taluk with 93% marks. Fathimath Rahila, class 9 student of Sarvodaya High School near Sulliapadavu, was supported by her uncle to write the exam. The exam, which is not compulsory for students was conducted by Bharatha Sanskriti Prathisthan in November 2015. Remarkably, Fathimath's father who is a factory worker is disappointed she could not top the state. Fathimath developed an interest in epic Hindu literature in class 9 and she says she now wants to write the Mahabharatha exam. All the best Fathimath.

Elvis, Picasso & Chaplin Are of Indian Origin....!
Singer Elvis Presley, painter Pablo Picasso and legendary actor Charlie Chaplin may have some elements of Indian ancestry in their roots. WOW.

A 3-day seminar is being held by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) that is hoping to explore and discuss what they believe are the Indian origins of these celebrities who belong to the Roma community.

ICCR director general C Rajasekhar explained that they want to study the Indian origins of the Romany people who have "faithfully maintained cultural and traditional practices of Indian heritage." He further explained that people from this community migrated from India to Europe around 2,500 years ago but they have still preserved many social and cultural traditions. They want to see how they can bring out that commonality and express an affinity towards them.

This conference is going to be attend by Sushma Swaraj, Mahesh Sharma and more than 30 scholars among others.

Tax Benefits For Leather & Jewellery
The govt said that for the forthcoming Budget, it’s considering a package of tax incentives for the labour-intensive leather and gems and jewellery sectors to boost manufacturing & exports.

Leather comes under the ‘Make in India’ initiative which aims to increase its exports to $15 bn by 2020 from the current $6 bn. Recommended incentives include elimination of customs duty on imported leather machinery from the current 26.5% duty, excise duty reduction up to ₹2K and increase in the abatement rate to 35% from 25%.

The suggestions will help in assisting technology upgradation, capacity modernization, expansion of manufacturing sector and achieving the $15 bn target. For the jewellery industry, customs duty may be raised to 15% from the current 10% and excise duty will be abolished on imitation jewellery due to its huge demand in the US and EU.

Modi Warns of Terror on the Seas..!
On Sunday, at the International Fleet Review 2016, PM Modi said that oceans were essential for the global energy security as over 60% of the world’s oil production moves through sea routes.

He said, “Threat of sea borne terror, of which India has been a direct victim, continues to endanger the regional and global peace and stability. Given the scale and complexity of modern day challenges the international maritime stability cannot be the preserve of a single nation. Navies and maritime agencies of the world need to work together and engineer virtuous cycles of cooperation. We must use seas to build peace, friendship and trust and curb conflict.”

The event was action-packed with several displays from the naval warships. PM Modi also released a book on “Maritime Heritage” during the event.

Since the PM Modi took office in May 2014, between the months of June and November he spent ₹77 cr on air travel in a matter of only 6 months! Unfortunately, the bills have only been processed for 2014 till now, so we don’t know the full figure of the total 19 flights PM Modi has taken.

Ex-PM Manmohan Singh has spent a total of ₹794.8 4cr which though seems to be a lot, when compared to his 10-year term in office brings it to about ₹79.5 cr per year – a figure that Modi has surpassed in just half a year. In his first 6 months, Singh only spend ₹30.45 cr on flights. Ex-BJP PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee travelled abroad only 19 times in 5 years, amounting a much smaller total expenditure of ₹144.34 cr or about ₹14.4 cr per 6 months.

Will Supreme Court Lift Ban on Gay Sex?
The Supreme Court has allowed a curative petition on the issue of Gay Sex, in Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. The petition is the last legal course of action that can be taken in a court of law.

The SC had referred the matter to a bench of 5 judges, leaving the door open for a judicial review of the controversial law. The referral is a standard procedure, but going by the history of India's judiciary, it is quite rare to that the court change their stance on the law.

Several LGBT activists are waiting outside the SC for their verdict on the petition and most of them hold a realistic outlook on it. They know that whether or not the petition comes to fruition, they’ll still have a long way to go in changing the mind-set of a nation
