Can Joe Mason fire Wolves to promotion

Mason began his career with his home town club Plymouth Argyle, where he made a total of 53 Football League appearances, prior to making the £210k switch to South Wales where he enjoyed an impressive first season under Malky Mackay’s Cardiff scoring a total of 12 goals which enabled the 24-year-old to quickly become a fan favourite.

Mason’s most remembered goal for the South Wales club came in the Capital One cup final at Wembley stadium against Liverpool which put Cardiff ahead.

Mason also scored 6 goals during Cardiff City’s promotion winning campaign before being shipped out to Bolton Wanderers on three separate occasions in two years on loan, scoring 10 goals in the process.

Now though Mason’s time in South Wales has come to an end following his £3million January transfer to Wolverhampton Wanderers who lost Benik Afobe to Premier League new boys Bournemouth.

Cardiff owner Vincent Tan, described the sale of Mason as ‘’Good Business’’ and since arriving at the Molineux, the 24-year-old has hit the ground running after playing twice and scoring on both occasions, including a debut goal in a draw with Bolton Wanderers and in the win over Preston.

The question now however is, can Joe Mason fire Kenny Jackett’s side to promotion or at least a top-six place this season? And judging from the start Mason has made at the club, Wolves fans could be optimistic that Mason could get the goals they have been lacking which would enable them to finish in a respectable position.

Mason was Cardiff City’ highest scorer and that was with a rotating attack which included Kenwyne Jones, Mason himself, Tony Watt, and Idriss Saadi, and therefore if Mason was to get some momentum behind him at Wolves in a consistent game to game basis he could be the answer to Kenny Jackett’s problems allowing them to climb the table rapidly.

Likely Premier League summer transfers

Odion Ighalo

Arsene Wenger has taken an interest in Watford centre forward, Ighalo. The Nigerian has been in fine form this season with 15 goals in the League. It's believed that he has been identified, as one of the top names on their shortlist of summer strikers. If Ighalo is the man Arsene wants, he will have to fend off interest from Chelsea and Atletico Madrid. The Striker recently mentioned that Arsenal was the boyhood team he supported growing up. Does that make Arsenal the favourites, to secure his services?

Possible Destinations: Arsenal, Chelsea

Dimitri Payet
Dimitri has been nothing short of sensational for the hammers this season. Scoring 7 goals in the league and creating 5 goals for his teammates. His performances has attracted the likes of Chelsea and the Chinese Super League. West Ham are only looking to be sell their star player for a huge deal. In January they received a £38 million bid from a Chinese club for his services and rejected it. West Ham are reportedly not looking for anything less than £45m.
Possible Destinations: Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United

Michael Carrick
The 34-year-old has not been a regular for the Red Devils this season, and it’s looking more and more likely that he won’t be offered a new contract at Old Trafford.
Its likely the England international most likely will be moving abroad.
However, the former Tottenham man could also have offers to stay in the Premier League.
Possible Destinations: Arsenal

Asmir Begovic

The 28-year-old has spent most of this season on the bench at Stamford Bridge being back up to Courtois. The frustrated keeper, is looking to move on to another Premier League side. With Howard expected to move to the MLS side Colorado Rapids at the end of the season, could Everton be the obvious choice.

Possible Destinations: Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United

John Stones
Stones was the subject of three bids from Chelsea last summer, which were all rejected by Everton. As they were looking to build on their young, promising squad. However, with a top-eight finish looking like the best they can achieve this season. Top clubs will circle for the 21-year-old's signature again.

Possible Destinations: Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United

3 Goalkeepers Liverpool should sign in summer

Premier League Liverpool are in eight place in the league table and are still on track to finish in the Europa League this season.

New manager Jurgen Klopp who took the reins at Anfield back in October has defended his goalkeepers especially Simon Mignolet who was approached over a contract extension late last year after the manager denied wanting a new first-choice goalkeeper at Liverpool

However, with high profile mistakes in both Premier League and Domestic cup competitions from both Simon Mignolet and Adam Bogdan including two goals conceded direct from a corner kick Klopp may have to re-evaluate the situation between the sticks at Anfield.

Promising Welsh goalkeeper Danny Ward was recently called back early from his loan deal with Scottish Outfit Aberdeen which asks the question of whether Klopp is actually content with his first two options in goal. The 22-year-old was due to be at Pittodrie until the summer and has been an ever present in the first team, keeping 11 clean sheets in 29 matches.

With the goalkeeper position at Liverpool under scrutiny, here I look at FOUR goalkeepers from the Football League that Liverpool should consider signing.

Kieran Westwood
The 31-year-old has made 18 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday this season, managing to keep 5 clean sheets in the process, and made a total of 44 appearances, keeping 16 clean sheets in all competitions last season.

Westwood has got Premier League experience under his belt with Sunderland between 2011 and 2014, making a total of 19 appearances after joining from Coventry City on a free transfer.

His experience at Club and International level would make him a good choice for Liverpool but the club may prefer a younger alternative.

David Marshall
David Marshall was regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League during Cardiff City’s debut season in the top flight where the Scotland International made a total of 45 appearances, keeping a total 8 clean sheets in all competitions.

The 30-year-old has been regularly linked to moves back to the Premier League with Everton, Liverpool, Arsenal and West Brom all believed to have been interested in the goalkeeper.

Marshall signed for the Bluebirds back in October 2010 after joining from Norwich for £385k aged 25 which has proved to be a shrewd acquisition by then manager Dave Jones.

Cardiff’s captain Marshall would be an expensive signing for Liverpool after Cardiff City placed a £10million valuation on the stopper following interest from Everton therefore Klopp could be put off a potential move, forcing him to look elsewhere.

Daniel Bentley
Southend United's highly rated goalkeeper Daniel Bentley has previously insisted that he has not been fazed by the speculation surrounding his future after being linked to a variety of clubs over the last year.

The 22-year-old was close to joining Sky Bet Championship side QPR in the summer but the former Premier League club opted to sign Alex Smithies instead and have recently signed Wycombe’s Matt Ingram which has closed the door on a move to Loftus road, although despite this Bentley still has a variety of suitors that could look to sign the former Arsenal goalkeeper.

Bentley has youth on his side and could be a future prospect for the English national side if he continues to perform consistently for Southend.

Bentley would likely be the best long term option for Liverpool although his lack of experience at Championship level never mind Premier League could hinder his chances of joining a club with such standing as Liverpool

3 players Sunderland should sign if relegated

Premier League side Sunderland are currently facing a tough uphill battle to keep their top flight status after the north east outfit currently sit in 19th just one place off bottom of the table, with a mediocre 23 points from 26 games, although with Sam Allerdyce holding the reins there is a chance that they could get out of trouble before the end of the season and avoid the drop.

However, if Sunderland were to suffer relegation for the first time since the 2005/06 campaign under Mick McCarthy, it is essential that the club start to build a shortlist of lower cost but talented players to help the club bounce back at the first time of asking.
A major boost for Sunderland however would be a seemingly positive turn in form of late after three wins and two draws in their last eight Premier League games, including vital wins over Swansea and bottom club Aston Villa.

The Black Cats have been walking the tight rope in the Premier League for some time now, but maybe this time their luck has run out, although in Jermaine Defoe the club have a top class forward who will get you goals at important stages of games and against big opponents.

The club would receive parachute payments of around £60m over four years, although would have to spend it wisely to comply with strict FFP guidelines.

Allerdyce’s team still face difficult fixtures with high flying Leicester, Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton between now and the end of the campaign and face a tough away clash with West Ham on Saturday.

Therefore,I lookat THREE players Sunderland should sign if they suffer relegation this season

Adam Le Fondre
The key to any successful promotion push in the Sky Bet Championship is goals, and with Jermaine Defoe unlikely to be tempted by a season in the second tier, a goal scorer is likely to be first on the list for The Black Cats.

29-year-old Adam Le Fondre is a proven goal scorer not only in the Championship but also in the Premier League after scoring an impressive 14 goals for Reading in the Premier League during the 2012/13 campaign, although it was not enough to save the club from relegation.

Le Fondre continued his goal-scoring form for Reading in the following Championship campaign where he found the net 15 times before joining Cardiff City for an undisclosed fee, where he has struggled for form, fitness and goals which resulted in the forward being loaned to Bolton Wanderers and more recently Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Despite his recent misfortunes, Le Fondre would still be a shrewd acquisition for Sunderland and with Cardiff City looking to offload the forward he may be a cost effective option.

Massimo Luongosun
Australian born midfielder Massimo Luongo only recently made the step into Sky Bet Championship football after joining QPR from Swindon Town for a reported £3.2million.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was surprisingly named alongside the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo on the 59-man longlist, for the most prestigious individual award in football, the Ballon d'Or world footballer of the year award.

The 23-year-old has been highly rated by many for some time now and has gained international silverware in the past, in the Asian Cup with his national side Australia where he was named the tournament's most valuable player.

There is no doubting Luongo’s ability and he would be a great addition to a Sunderland side looking to add a creative midfielder to their squad.

Barry Bannon
Scottish International Barry Bannan, graduated from Celtic’s youth system before joining Aston Villa back in 2008, during his time at Villa he spent time out on loan with Derby, Blackpool, and Leeds before joining Crystal Palace for a reported £1.4million in September 2013.

The Gifted Sheffield Wednesday play-maker has fitted seamlessly into Carlos Carvalhal’s side after joining from Premier League Crystal Palace for an undisclosed fee back in August, and has also extended his contract in recent weeks after signing a fresh three-and-a-half-year extension, however if Wednesday fail to secure promotion this season, a move to Sunderland could tempt him.

The 26-year-old has featured 27 times for Wednesday this season scoring 2 goals and has started to re-build his reputation after failing to make the grade at Palace.
Bannan has demonstrated his willingness to drop into the Championship for regular first team football after joining Wednesday and an opportunity to stay in the second tier with Sunderland could be a head turner.

3 players Newcastle should sign if relegated

High profile Newcastle United have put their money where their mouth is this season after successfully splashing out a reported £73million throughout both transfer windows under new boss Steve McClaren, however the club have struggled to build any sort of momentum to climb the table with many fans now calling for the former England manager’s head.
The Magpies are sitting just inside the dreaded drop zone in 18th place, with an unhealthy 24 points from their 26 league games, level on points with Norwich who secured promotion from the Sky Bet Championship last season which gives them a good chance of getting out of trouble.

The club were last relegated from the Premier League back in the 2008/09 campaign when club legend Alan Shearer wasn’t able to keep his boyhood club up, before Chris Hughton led the club back to the promise land the following season.

Newcastle have had major transfer blunders over the last few seasons where they have had a tendency to bring in unexperienced and unproven footballers mainly from France who haven’t got the ability or work rate required when fighting relegation, and therefore It is essential that the club’s hierarchy start to look the bad apples to clear out and the players to bring in, to assist in a promotion push.

One of the biggest problems facing any newly relegated club’s is the major task of complying with strict FFP rules, where the club’s usually extortionate salary costs could land them in a transfer embargo, which would be the definition of a nightmare for any side trying to bounce back first time.

Would McClaren keep his job if the club suffered relegation? That is yet to be seen although he has managed in the second tier with Derby County and despite not securing promotion with The Rams the 54-year-old would be a sensible choice ahead of introducing a foreign manager with little knowledge of the second tier.

Therefore,Ihave identifiedTHREE players Newcastle United should sign if they suffer relegation this season..

Joe Lewis
6ft 5’ shot-stopper Joe Lewis is desperate for a permanent move away from South Wales after making just 1 league appearance for The Bluebirds in four years, during a Premier League draw with Hull City.

The 28-year-old has spent the current campaign out on loan with Fulham, making 9 appearances for the former Premier League club and spent last season out on loan with Blackpool who suffered relegation to League One.

Lewis joined Malky Mackay’s Cardiff City back in July 2012 on a free transfer but the fine form of Scottish goalkeeper David Marshall and the introduction of Simon Moore has pushed the 28-year-old down the pecking order and no longer has a future at the club.

Lewis was once tipped for greatness after being called up to the England squad by Fabio Capello but has disappeared from the picture almost as quickly as he appeared upon it and would snatch at the chance to join Newcastle after it is unlikely that Time Krul would want to stick around in the Championship.

Bruno Ecuele Manga
27-year-old Gabon international defender Bruno Manga is considered one of the best centre-back’s in the second tier of English football after winning the Bluebirds player of the season during his debut campaign.
Manga joined Cardiff City back in September 2014 for a reported £5milllion as a replacement for the departing club captain Mark Hudson who made the switch to Huddersfield Town.

The tough tackling defender has struggled with injury problems in his second season in South Wales, resulting in the player only managing to 14 appearances for the club this season.

Manga has recently admitted that failure to secure promotion this term with Cardiff City might see him forced to look elsewhere to fulfil his Premier League dreams and therefore a move to prestigious Newcastle would defiantly turn his head.

Matt Phillips
Highly-rated wide-man Matt Phillips has had his fair share of admirers since joining QPR back in August 2014 for a reported £4million from Blackpool.
Premier League clubs, West Brom and Sunderland have been linked to the Scottish born midfielder since QPR suffered relegation although neither club’s managed to meet the Championship outfit’s valuation.

Phillips made 27 appearances for QPR during his debut Premier League campaign scoring 3 goals and has managed to double his tally in the current campaign scoring 6 goals in 32 appearances.

The midfielder is desperate to get back to the top-flight of English football and may feel that Newcastle United would stand a better chance at gaining promotion than his current club.

Match Review: West Ham United vs Sunderland

Early kick-offs on a Saturday can either make or break your weekend: three points and you can sit comfy for the rest of the day, maybe even treat yourself to a few pints. Come away with nothing and you'll be ‘effing and jeffing’ to yourself and those pints will taste much more bitter. Neither of those moods really apply to West Ham fans after that performance though. Yes, the three points are the main thing and a clean sheet is an added bonus, but that second half performance really was shocking and with Tottenham and Everton in the next week, that kind of form can’t be replicated. Sunderland fans will be feeling hard done by and rightly so, they were the better team in the second half and were unlucky to come away empty handed.

The only goal came courtesy of a piece of class from Michail Antonio in the 30th minute. Granted, he was helped by a defensive error from Patrick van Aanholt but he showed good pace to burst into the box and then finished it brilliantly on his weaker foot. That’s his 5th goal in 15 starts for his new side and if it wasn't for Dimitri Payet, he’d be my pick as West Ham’s signing of the season. Mark Noble also had a fantastic strike brilliantly tipped onto the crossbar in the opening half an hour by a diving Mannone after a great weaving run by Lanzini to set him up, something the Hammers have certainly missed in his absence.

Sunderland fought back strongly though and came out firing in the second half, with Jermaine Defoe snatching a half volley wide from just outside the box and having another chance called offside but which you would expect him to finish. Jack Rodwell also made a great impact off the bench, forcing a great save from Adrian from close range and having his follow up rightly disallowed for handball. The Hammers also had a couple of chances, with the best one being a close ranged Andy Carroll right-footed volley rocketing onto the crossbar before finding its way into a grateful Victor Mannone’s hands.

That win moves West Ham onto 43 points - their highest total after 27 Premier League games and a real testament to the work Slaven Bilic has done. A positive is that despite playing poorly, they've managed to come away with all three points and they're one step closer to achieving European qualification. Sunderland, on the other hand, played well and came away with nothing and that can be a real problem in a relegation dogfight. With Big Sam in charge, though, they should still be a Premier League team come the end of the season.

ZOBAHAN LOOK TO CONTINUE CONTINENTAL CHARGE

Iran’s Zobahan were one of three Iranian teams to win on Matchday One of the AFC Champions League as Yahya Golmohammadi’s side recorded a 1-0 win over Qatar champions Lekhwiya.
Coach Yahya Golmohammadi believes former finalists Zobahan can maintain their winning ways in their second Group B meeting with Qatar champions Lekhwiya in the AFC Champions League on Tuesday.

On their return to the continental competition last Tuesday after a five year absence, Mahdi Rajabzadeh scored in the first minute of the second half at Abdulla Bin Khalifa Stadium as Golmohammdi’s side recorded a 1-0 win over Lekhwiya in Doha.

And with all three Iranian teams proving successful on Matchday One, Golmohammadi is looking for more of the same when Zobahan play host to Lekhwiya at Foolad Shahr Stadium in the return meeting in Isfahan.

“This was the best possible start that we could thing of because winning against Lekhwiya is not easy and I’m happy with the performance of the players,” said Golmohammadi following the win over Lekhwiya.

“Winning the away match will give us a big push and hopefully we can maintain this advantage in the next match.”

Also on Group B on Tuesday, Bunyodkor entertain Saudi Arabian champions Al Nassr after the sides shared a thoroughly entertaining 3-3 draw in Riyadh on Matchday One.

AFC Young Player of the Year Dostonbek Khamdamov scored twice, but a late free-kick from veteran Hussain Abdulghani rescued a point for Al Nassr.

Elsewhere, Korea Republic’s FC Seoul will look to continue the form they showed in their eye-catching 6-0 win over Buriram United as they entertain Japanese champions Sanfrecce Hiroshima in Group F, while the Thai champions will hope to bounce back away to Shandong Luneng in China.

Buriram will, however, be without Suchao Nutnum after the captain was sent-off against FC Seoul and there is fitness doubts around striker Diogo.

“Before we lost Diogo, I think we played well. But after he got injured, our game was messed up so we changed our tactics, but it didn't work,” said Buriram coach Alexandre Gama after the Brazilian was substituted after just 17 minutes.

“We also conceded goals and got a red card. This totally changed our game and made us play harder.

“So from now on, we have to start again and come back to fight. We still have a long way to go. We will do our best.”

Also in the East, Group E’s early pace-setters Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors will aim to build on a solid start to their campaign as the K-League Classic champions travel to China to face Jiangsu FC after their opening 2-1 win over FC Tokyo, while the Japanese capital city club will host Vietnamese champions Becamex Binh Duong.

Binh Duong, though, will be without Cameroon striker Christian Amougou after the forward was sent-off in the 1-1 draw with Jiangsu.

Finally in Group A, Iranian champions Sepahan will look to the double over Al Nasr of the United Arab Emirates when they travel to Dubai after their 2-0 win in Isfahan last Tuesday, while Saudi Arabia’s Al Ittihad will be aiming to get their first win of the AFC Champions League campaign when they host Lokomotiv of Uzbekistan.

Al Ittihad, though, will be without striker Fahad Al Muwallad, while Lokomotiv’s Jasur Khasanov is also ruled out through suspension after the pair were both sent-off in the closing stages of last Tuesday’s 1-1 draw in Tashkent.

Shillong Lajong Host DSK Shivajians On Return Leg

SHILLONG: It will be the second encounter in less than a week between the sides when Shillong Lajong FC host DSK Shivajians in the Round 10 encounter of the Hero I-League at the JN Stadium in Shillong tomorrow. The two sides had played out a 1-1 draw at Pune on Sunday.

Placed at the bottom of the table, DSK Shivajians gaffer Derrick Pereira felt that all is not lost for his side and they can still break through to the top half of the Hero I-League

“There are only nine teams in the league and two or three wins can change things for us,” Pereira said during the pre-match conference in Shillong today. The former Salgaocar coach feels that the key would be to stay focused now and play as a unit.

Talking about the performance of his side in its debut season, Pereira said that the boys did not get enough time to prepare for the Hero I-League. “We were supposed to play the second division and my aim was to build a team. Some of our boys could not recover on time from the niggles,” he added.

DSK Shivajians have won only one of their eight matches till now and have a mountain to climb if they are to make a mark in the debut season.

For Shillong Lajong, which does not enjoy immunity like its Pune rival, any slip up may lead to the situation they had to overcome last season. Coach Thangboi Singto is well aware of that and minced no words when he said, “We have to fight for the survival.” Singto said that the fate of the Reds will depend on their consistency and the ability to score more goals.

“If you look at the table we are not doing too bad; there were some tight games which we should have won (hinting towards the last tie against DSK). It will be all about consistency and score more goals,” Singto added.

The hosts, however, have more than one thing to worry about. Their Brazilian duo of Uilliams Silva and Fabio Pena would be doubtful starters on Friday. Both are nursing slight injuries. “A final call on them will be taken tomorrow,” Singto informed before leaving the press conference room. An interesting encounter is on the cards at the JN Stadium tomorrow with a lot at stake for both sides.

FC SEOUL HIT BURIRAM FOR SIX IN CONTINENTAL OPENER

ACL - Former finalists FC Seoul from Korea Republic began the 2016 AFC Champions League with an impressive 6-0 win over Buriram United in Thailand.
Former finalists FC Seoul sounded an early warning to their continental rivals with a dominant 6-0 win over Thailand champions Buriram United as the AFC Champions League retuned this week, while defending champions Guangzhou Evergrande were held to a goalless draw by Pohang Steelers.

Brazilian Adriano scored four times at Buriram Stadium, with Dejan Damjanovic and substitute Lee Seok-hyun adding further goals, as the 2013 runners-up eased to victory in Thailand.

And the side from the Korea Republic capital were joined at the top of Group F by China’s Shandong Luneng after Yang Xu and Diego Tardelli scored to secure a 2-1 win over Japanese champions Sanfrecce Hiroshima.

“Even though this is the first game of our season, we are happy to score many goals which make us feel very confident,” said FC Seoul coach Choi Yong-soo.

“The co-ordination between Adriano and Dejan was very good. They give us confidence.”

Luiz Felipe Scolari’s Guangzhou, meanwhile, were unable to get the better of another K-League side in the form of three-time Asian champions Pohang and were forced to settle for a goalless stalemate at Tianhe Sport Centre.

Instead, it is Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds who are the early Group H leaders after Yuki Muto and Shinzo Koroki netted to secure a 2-0 win over A-League side Sydney FC.

“This is a fair result. We were short of some good match tempo and we haven't reached where we were last year. We went to Dubai for winter training, but ended up with only one training match. Now we are having some difficulties, but this game is within my expectations. What we were missing was one goal,” said Guangzhou coach Scolari.

“We are still two or three matches away from having the right season vibe back.”

Also on Wednesday, Iran’s Tractorsazi Tabriz were the third of three Iranian clubs to secure an opening day win as they beat Al Jazira of the United Arab Emirates 4-0 to leap to the top of Group C ahead of two-time Asian champions Al Hilal and Uzbek League winners Pakhtakor after the pair shared a 2-2 draw.

Elsewhere, goals from Jai Ingham and Besart Berisha saw Australian champions Melbourne Victory edge out Chinese Super League runners-up Shanghai SIPG 2-1 at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium in Group G, while Suwon Samsung Bluewings and Gamba Osaka shared a goalless draw.

Also in the East, 2006 winners Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors beat Japan’s FC 2-1 to take an early lead in Group E, while the meeting between Chinese FA Cup winners Jiangsu FC and Vietnamese champions Becamex Binh Duong ended in a 1-1 draw.

Iran’s Zobahan celebrated their return to the AFC Champions League after a five-year absence with a 1-0 win over Qatar champions Lekhwiya to become Group B front-runners.

And also in Group B, Saudi Arabia Professional League winners Al Nassr salvaged a 3-3 draw with visitors Bunyodkor of Uzbekistan thanks to a late equaliser from Hussein Abdulghani.

In Group A, Iranian champions Sepahan defeated Emirati side Al Nasr 2-0 in Isfahan, while the group’s earlier fixture in Tashkent saw two-time AFC Champions League winners Al Ittihad draw 1-1 with Lokomotiv.

Finally in Group D, Omar Al Soma scored with a header early in the second half to seal a 2-1 win for Al Ahli over Uzbekistan’s Nasaf.

But there was disappointment for 2003 champions Al Ain, who succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Qatar Stars League side El Jaish.

Obama offers Supreme Court hints; top Democrat suggests Republican governor

President Barack Obama said Wednesday it would be "difficult" for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to explain his decision not to consider a Supreme Court nominee without looking like he's motivated by politics.
Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid suggested a Republican, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, as a potential nominee. A source confirmed to CNN that the White House is vetting Sandoval, although he has not been actively involved in the process.
"Neither Governor Sandoval nor his staff have been contacted by or talked to the Obama Administration regarding any potential vetting for the vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court," according to a statement from Mari St. Martin, his communications director.
Obama's pointed remarks and Reid's unconventional suggestion come amid a bitter standoff between Senate Republicans and the White House over naming a Supreme Court replacement for Justice Antonin Scalia, whose death this month launched an epic election-year fight over constitutional powers and precedent.
"I recognize the politics are hard for them because the easier thing to do is to give in to the most extreme voices within their party and stand pat and do nothing," Obama said. "But that's not our job. Our job is to fulfill our constitutional duties."
Claiming he felt sympathy for Republican lawmakers making "sheepish" arguments for blocking his court choice, Obama insisted he would "nominate somebody and let the American people decide as to whether that person is qualified."
